If it's outdoors, I'm there.
And, if I can work a camera into the mix, then life is really good.
I have a bachelor's degree in journalism from Michigan State University, 1978, and a master's in mass communication from the University of South Florida, Tampa, 1989 -- summa cum laude.
I've been a reporter, photojournalist, print designer, managing editor, technology training editor, news researcher, and audio engineer for podcasts and news interviews.
Through the years, I've worked in Michigan, Kansas, New York City and Florida. For the majority of my career, until September 2008, I was employed at one of the top-ten newspapers in the United States for over 20 years. I made a name for myself, worldwide, regarding newsroom technology training with a specialty in what has become known as computer-assisted reporting, a form of watchdog journalism. Through my consulting business, I still teach journalists how to anaylze public records so they'll know how to interview data like any other source.
As the owner of my own consulting business, I specialize in designing Web sites, shooting photos -- both still and video, and producing multimedia for the Web and promotional DVDs. I also teach journalism at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg as an adjunct professor. Since 2004, I've taught Beginning Reporting, Advanced Reporting, Convergence (multimedia), News Design, Web Design, Research Methods, Writing for the Mass Media, Photojournalism I, Photojournalism II and Video Storytelling.
Oh yes, and I invented a laptop blanket that I also sell here on my Web site and through Amazon.com.
I am a student of many topics and I love to teach others what I know. Along the way, I've been a speaker at various seminars and conferences at the local through national levels. Once, my teaching took me to Denmark for a week. That was an adventure of a lifetime. Some of my speaking work is pro bono, most of it is for a fee.
In the fall of 2009, I became editor of the Florida Paddling Trails Association's quarterly newsletter. It's a volunteer post and a way for me to give back to the environment using my journalism and teaching knowledge. My Wolfe Tracks: Adventures in the Great Outdoors photography column will become a regular feature beginning in 2010.
Having fun at what I do for work and pleasure is paramount. Life is too short for anything less.
Mr. Nick was my fur person buddy for many years. Now, Oreo keeps me company. He's a cat-dog. Good thing he's part dog because I've never had a cat before. I'm happy he comes when he's called, but he only shows up when he wants to.
Thanks for stopping by.
