As s a kid in Michigan, I started my still photography career with a Brownie. Then, I used my dad's Argus C3 a few times.
When I was a senior in undergrad school at Michigan State, I borrowed a Nikon to take my first published news photo. That's when I was hooked. I was already an experienced and accomplished reporter and I'd been an editor too, but photo-journalism was what struck a chord because a picture can be more powerful than a word. It's language is universal.
In 1978, I landed my first job as a combination photojournalist and reporter working for a small county seat daily in northwest Kansas --
The Colby (Kan.) Free Press and Weekend Prairie Drummer. Hey, at least John Denver wrote about the small town in one of his songs! During this time, I was also a regular stringer for the Associated Press.
My cameras have taken me to the photo district in NYC, all across the United States, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Tijuana and western Europe. They've kept me company under water, in caves, on the top of the fourteeners in the Rockies or Jung Frau in the Alps, on downhill skis, on sailboats of all flavors, horses, a parachute, in a hot air balloon, airplanes and jets, and of course my kayaks.
I switched to digital at the end of the 90s, but I still have working film cameras in various formats. By 2002, I added digital video to my camera bag.
In 1979, I began teaching photography at the college level, and I haven't stopped. Now, as an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, I regularly teach Photojournalism I, Photojournalism II and Video Storytelling I.
I also offer private photography lessons for those folks who are too busy to commit to a college course.
Public speaking is also one of my passions as I love to share what I know. I'm available to speak to groups or I can lead hands-on seminars on a variety of topics. Some appearances are pro bono while others are not.
I also do portraiture, news and event photography and am willing to travel worldwide. Contact me for booking and pricing.
Most of all, I have fun!
